Happy New Year!

Happy 2009! Here in Vietnam, New Years is a much bigger deal than Christmas. We saw a whole herd of schoolchildren in class on Christmas Day, but on New Years Eve and New Years Eve absolutely everything is closed...except large karaoke parties.

Locals tell us that New Years marks the beginning of the "Christmas break" for most Vietnamese. Tet, Lunar New Year or Chinese New Year happens around Jan 28th this year. Many people will work 15 hours a day most everyday of the year, but everyone takes off New Years and oftentimes stay on break until after Tet.

Hope 2009 is a good one for you!
