Not quite an idiom

We are staying with some physician friends. The husband is an ear, nose, throat surgeon, and he happens to have just gotten a skull to do extra study on. The skull is real.

We were discussing costs and how you go about purchasing something (and I, being the only nonscientist in the room was questioning whether it is a little weird to have someone's head on your bookshelf).

Trina had an insightful question too, regarding its purchase.

"Is it used?"
